JM Lab Focal Mini Utopia...
These speakers literally made me walk in a small aural euphoria utopia for two months, back in 2004.
I used to visit local audio shops every once in a while, and one day, there they were. At that time, my dream speakers were JBL 4343, so these babies were, in fact just good looking babies and nothing more. Never knew those tiny 6.5in units could shake one's heart, which was meant for 15in woofers.
JM Lab Mini Utopia... 2004년도에 두달 남짓 말그대로 Utopia를 거닐게 했던 스피커입니다.
국내 카오디오 매니아 분들에게는 유닛의 성능으로 유명한 회사이기도 합니다.
당시 한참 오디오의 매력에 푹 빠져있던때라 귀동냥을 많이 다니던 때였습니다. 잘 아는 오디오샵에 놀러간 어느날 이 아가씨가 자태를 뽐내고 있었습니다. 당시 가진 건 없어도 귀는 높을 때로 높아진 때였고 내 오디오의 목표는 JBL 4343이다라고 다짐하던때라 이 아가씨의 날씬하고 귀티나는 모습은 그냥 미인에 불과했습니다. 겨우 6.5인치 우퍼 2개로 15인치 우퍼의 저음을 목표로 하는 사람의 마음을 흔들줄은 꿈에도 몰랐던거죠.
I still remember, even now in 2019, the first song the shop owner put on for these speakers, which was '1812 Overture (Tchaikovsky)' by Neeme Jarvi. For classical music lovers, this song is known for its large scale and dynamics including the real cannons firing in the climax!
Talk about resolution at its best. Everything on the disc was delivered to the listener with rock solid, chest thumping bass.
오디오샵 주인장이 이거 한번 들어보라면서 이 스피커에 들었던 차이코프스키의 '1812'(니메 야르비 지휘)는 지금도 생생히 귀에 들리는듯 합니다. 그 극한의 해상도는 소리가 눈에 보이는 경험이 어떤건지 느끼게 해주었습니다. 단단하면서 가슴을 때리는 저음 또한 일품이었구요.
Mini Utopia isn't as well known as its lesser sibling, Micro Utopia. This the most popular sibling sure has its weaknesses, lightweight bass being one of them.
This downside is drastically improved on the taller sibling, by adding another mid/bass unit on top of its famous focal Utopian tweeter. This additional placement also was intended on creating the pseudo coaxial unit effect, helping on better staging and lifelike presentation.
사실 이것보다 한단계 아래의 마이크로 유토피아가 우리나라에서는 더 유명합니다. 아니 전세계적으로 훨씬 더 많이 판매된 유토피아 라인의 베스트셀러가 마이크로 유토피아입니다. 그런데 이 모델의 단점이 저음의 빈약함이었습니다. 단단하지만 빈약한 저음 때문에 많은 오디오파일들이 가슴 아파했었죠. 그 바로 윗 모델인 이 아가씨는 바로 그런을 해결한 제품입니다. 마이크로 유토피아만큼 단단하면서도 듀얼 우퍼로 훨씬 많은 저음을 무리없이 내줍니다.
Micro and Mini Utopia are not the usual run-of-mill bass-reflex speakers nor closed-type. There are ducts, yes, but these are not meant to enhance or deepen the low frequency. These ducts do help on bass, but they won't artificially enhance like bass-reflex port designs. Let's just say the units breath better with these ventilation ducts. So the sound signature of the low frequency is somewhere in the middle of the two types, leaning a bit toward the closed design, rock solid and hefty if driven right, but never gets loose and slow.
밀폐형이 아닌 스피커들은 대개 베이스-리플렉스 스피커라고 봐도 과언이 아닙니다. 그런데 이 스피커는 밀폐형이 아님에도 베이스-리플렉스라고 하기에는 조금 어렵습니다. 이 스피커 윗 모델이 더 큰 몸집의 톨보이 형태이면서 베이스-리플렉스 포트도 갖추고 있기 때문에 그 모델인 메조 유토피아는 베이스-리플렉스가 맞습니다만 미니 유토피아는 그런 포트 대신 트위터 아래 위로 덕트가 위치해 있습니다. 이 덕트 덕분에 밀폐형 보다 더 여유로운 저음을 내주지만 베이스 리플렉스 모델보다 더 단단한 저음을 내줍니다.
Since Micro and Mini Utopia are actually siblings, they share common speaker stands, called... well guess what it's called, yes, Utopia Stands!
These cost $2,000 in Korea at the time of their release.
마이크로 유토피아와 미니 유토피아가 공히 사용하는 유토피아 스탠드입니다. 이 스탠드는 원래 별매인데 첫 출시되었을때 국내 가격이 무려 2백만원이었다고 합니다. 디자인은 잘 맞지만 요즘 스탠드들이 워낙 잘 나오는터라 계륵에 가까웠습니다. 제 방이 작은 방이 아니라서 별로 커보이지 않지만 실제로 보면 덩치가 상당한 아가씨입니다. ㅎ
All I can tell you about those days are, that you do not want these speakers hooked up to low powered amps nor old cd players. Take care of these babies and they will show you what the music was meant to be. That's why her popular sibling's second hand price had dropped considerably for the last 15 years, these speakers' price hadn't.
당시의 방의 전경입니다. 커튼 뒤로는 창문입니다. 앰프는 불칸 구형 EL34pp 인티앰프였고 CDP는 파이오니어 CDP입니다. 크릭 인티앰프가 찬조출연 했군요.
재정의 압박으로 두달만에 내보냈어야 했지만 그 소리는 결코 잊지 못합니다. 몇년후에 다시 제 방을 차지하고 있을 그 날이 기다려집니다.
